Sr. Mary Drum, MSC, writes to ask for assistance to establish a Hostel facility for disadvantaged young single women and Child Day Care for the care and development of pre-school age children.

"Increasing numbers of young women and children are very vulnerable circumstances in Port Moresby urban environment.  Those most at risk are young women who have migrated to the city from the rural areas  in search of opportunities for education and employment to improve their own livelihood chances, and those of their rural communities.

They are in the very high risk category for HIV/AIDS infection and this project is designed to try to safeguard at least some of these vulnerable young people from this outcome.

The cost of establishment of the joint hostel, child day care facility is currently estimated at approximately Three million Kina (K3,000,000) of which we have raised just over two thirds with the assistance of Church funding agencies, the commitments of organisations supporting the welfare of women and children, and from our own resources.

Funding appeals have recently been made and negotiations are continuing with potential partners both from within the country and beyond to secure the remaining funds to complete the project within this calendar year."

Can you help?
